@atomicpoet This number is a bit disingenous tho. Yes, sure, 21k per month on Patreon, but if you read through their about section, they immediately mention that corporate sponsors can donate through their own system. And on their website they list 29 sponsors that have the Platinum Tier which is at 500$ per month.

This means that in addition to the 21 000$ from Patreon they recieve a minimum of 14 500$ from corporate sponsors.

Now, that's not even all of them, there's also the Gold Tier sponsors which are listed on the sponsors page. The Platinum sponsors are duplicated here, but subtracting those leaves us with 19 Gold Tier sponsors which adds an additional 3 800$.

There's also an additional 4 sponsors on the Rosegold Tier, but it doesn't say what the price is for that, so I won't speculate or count it.

The total adds up to 39 300$.

Mastodon has 4 employees according to the website and afaik, does not pay contributors. Without factoring in server costs, this would be a salary of 117 900$ per year for each of them if the pay is evenly distributed. But it's highly unlikely to be evenly distributed as I doubt all four of them work 100% at this project (that's speculation on my part tho)

When people say they take issue with you pushing people to donate to Mastodon, this is why. Because they're already making a decent amount of money and could've saved lots of money by downscaling their own instances and push stronger towards distributing people to other instances. And when you do that, those other instances will get increased costs and strain and require money to fund that.

People don't want to support Mastodon because

they are centralising power towards their instances, which is antiethical to the federated nature of the fediverse
Mastodon is not the only fedi software, it's just the one that somehow became synonymous with fedi when that's just damaging the decentralisation
Mastodon is already gaining lots of attention and will gain a lot of supporters. You don't need to remind them of this. What needs to be reminded is to donate to the ones that aren't being heavily promoted right now.
Mastodon is Free Software which means that even if Eugen stops working on it, someone else can fork it and pick it up. A popular fork of Mastodon is the glitch-soc fork for instance, which has contributed a lot to upstream Mastodon.
Pushing hard towards Mastodon is not good for the overall health of the fediverse. By fortifying Mastodon, you're giving them more power over the overall implementation of the spec. Centralisation of power is bad.
Other fedi projects don't even have any way to donate to them. Pleroma has nowhere that I could find to donate, nor does glitch-soc. This builds upon my previous argument and was not meant as an argument on its own.

I'm not saying no one should donate to Mastodon. I'm saying that the presentation of this is very much like "look how little money they're making, we need to do more!" when, if they decided to push towards actual decentralisation, it wouldn't really be all that little money.

There is no "ensure the continued survival of Mastodon". Mastodon will live on even if no one else donates. They'd just have to consider reducing their servers, which is overall a good thing for the network.
